We live at the crossfader of theatre and hip hop as a means to dismantle the traditional power structures found within the theater-making process by channelling the Hip Hop Cypher as a conduit for inclusive storytelling.
‘Circle Up’ is the first single featuring the entire Bay Area Theatre Cypher crew. This posse cut was created in 2022 when we were invited to perform with Freestyle Love Supreme at American Conservatory Theater. The song features GRAMMY winner Tommy Soulati Shepherd of Alphabet Rockers, Carlos Aguirre aka Infinite, RyanNicole, Phil Wong, Dan Wolf, Davied Morales aka @activepoet, and Rahman Jamaal and was produced by Tommy Soulati Shepherd.
The song is the second release on our own record label imprint Theatre Cypher Records and is out on ALL PLATFORMS NOW!

Currency smashes open “The Merchant of Venice” and place the infamous merchant Shylock at the center of our world, not as a caricature but instead as a reflection of the immigrant, working class, citizens of our port cities. Using direct address monologues and rap songs, “Currency” visits the marketplaces of West Oakland, Hong Kong, Managua, Downtown LA, and Venice to connect those "othered" by society with the larger issues of place, race, privilege, ownership, violence, and revolution.
